COUPLER APPLICATION NOTES

Spliceless Fiber Assemblies

Splice-free coupler trees and assemblies are available in custom configurations having very low backreflection and insertion loss.

Other fiber devices, such as the 968P polarization splitter, can be integrated with coupler arrays to form advanced communications systems and fiber interferometers. Examples include 1xN port dividers, polarization diversity receivers and fiber tap arrays.

There are several advantages to the use of tunable couplers in the above systems. They can be adjusted for use with light sources of different wavelengths. For example, a variable coupler can be set to give exactly 50/50 coupling at either 1280 nm or 1320 nm wavelengths. In resonant fiber ring systems, a variable coupler allows the resonance to be tuned to match the source wavelength precisely, ensuring high finesse. The ability to vary coupling ratios is also useful for compensation of differing losses or gains in a system.
